How Do I Repair A Toilet That Won’t Stop Running?

2024/03/28

Instructions
1. Remove the tank lid.Examine the flapper, a red or black rubber mechanism that locks the water in the tank and allows it to drain when raised.Check the chain connecting the flush lever to the flapper to ensure correct seating. If the chain is too short to adequately seat the flapper, add slack or use snips to remove extra.
2Turn the shutoff valve behind the toilet completely clockwise to turn off the water, then flush the toilet. To remove the damaged flapper from the tank, unhook the ears from the pegs on the bottom of the overflow tube and separate the chain from the flush lever.
3To remove the collar, cut the replacement flapper along the “CUT” line using scissors.Place the flapper ears on the pegs at the bottom of the overflow tube.Hook the chain to the flush lever, giving enough slack for the flapper to seat properly in the closed position. To replenish the tank, turn the shutdown valve counterclockwise.Flush the toilet and see if the flapper rises and sits properly.
4. Determine whether water is increasing and leaking into the overflow tube. This indicates a defective fill valve.Bend the float arm down to lower the water level. If your tank uses a water-intake assembly instead of a float ball, slide the clip and float cup down on the fill valve.Flush the toilet and see if the water refills to the right level.
5Turn the shut-off valve completely clockwise, turning off the toilet’s water supply, if you notice that the fill valve is damaged and needs to be replaced
Flush the toilet and hold down the handle to get the maximum water out of the tank.To absorb the remaining water, place a cloth beneath the tank.Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew and remove the supply tubing from the bottom of the tank.Remove the fill valve.Place the replacement fill valve in the tank.Hand tighten the supply tubing to the bottom of the new fill valve, located beneath the tank.Tighten the supply tube an additional 1/2 turn with the wrench.Turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to check for leaks.
